hi...i'm an oracle newbie!
just installed oracle 8 - the client part of the package.
i'm trying to connect to the local db using sql plus 8.0.
i tried t username - SCOTT and password - TIGER leaving the hoststring blank.
but i get the error mesg - TNS - unable to connect to destination.
so what shd. i do regarding this...expecting help

I'm no expert but I only get the "TNS - unable to connect to destination." error when the server isn't started.

If by local db you mean one that is stored on your harddrive you will want to install the server as well and turn it on before trying to connect to the database.

Check your TNSNAMES.ORA file for SID Connection, eg. (C:\orant\NET80\ADMIN) directory, check with your system administrator, he/she should be able to tell you what is your connection string.
