A couple of things to check:
One of the things I have found is that, if you are seeing 100% CPU as well, that this is related to a HD corruption issue (went through a bug on this one).

You may also want to check that the media is functional by running the installer from another machine.

Check the machine's installed java environments (JSDKs,
JREs, etc). Just to help rule out problems with these
(in particular older JREs) remove them and try again.

One of the old things that shouldn't be happening to you is a problem with the number of colors set for your display. Try to make sure that you are not set to true color, and are at least at 256 colors, ideally "High Color" or 16 bit seems to be the best. I'll say it again, I don't think that this is your issue.

I hope this helps.

Sadly, for the time being, you can only use 8.1.6 and below installer for Win2000 and WinXP

What you describe is a known bug in Oracle Universal Installer (1.7.1.9.0) for 8.1.7, that is supposed to be fixed in a patch. It is regarding an issue with Symantecs JIT and Pentium IVs (which obiously don't play;-).
There are (at least one) workaround though.
I copied the content of the install media to disk, and renamed the file symcjit.dll found in the obvious place:
[[toplevel dir]]stageComponentsoracle.swd.jre1.1.7.301DataFilesExpandedjrewin32bin) to something else.
This will prevent JIT from being invoked, but still let you install (just run setup from [[toplevel dir]]).

Mr Francisco Camacho the error u are having can be controlled by stoping the oraclehttpservice from controlpanel->administrative tools -> services . u will never face the error message again.

I am also having an issue installing Oracle 8.1.7 on a Windows 2000 server. I have renamed the symcjit.dll file but it is still hanging up on the Net8 configuration. Any thoughts??
