Hi,

We're in the precarious position of having to make purchasing decisions for two identical Oracle (10g) servers while we're still breaking our teeth on Oracle, migrating from MySQL.

We're purchasing boxes with 3.06 GHz CPU(s), 4 GB RAM, and 6 x 15K SCSI disks (each) which we plan to stripe. The question is, should we go for dual or single CPUs? Will servers such as these be CPU bound with a single CPU? Bear in mind when answering this question that the cost of the second CPU is highly inflated when you consider the licensing and support costs to Oracle. Adding a second CPU will pretty much double the cost of the whole server. So can we expect to see anything close to double the performance?

Thanks,

Scott
