We just upgraded one of our databases to 11g on a new server. The 3rd party application that accesses the db is 32 bit. The software needs to be running on the db server in order for some transactions to occur. Since the oracle client on the db server is 64bit do we need to install a 32 bit client as well. As of right now we are getting an error in the software when trying to connect to the db that says "Test failed. provider cannot be found. it may not be properly installed." This is a live production server so uninstalling and reinstalling oracle is not really an option at this time (unless absolutely necessary). How will installing a 32 bit oracle client effect everything (if that is the route we need to take).

WOW!
So much for testing prior to deployment.

If you install 32-bit client into its own ORACLE_HOME tree, nothing else will be impacted.

Yes at least an instant client.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately this application is administered by several different people who failed to let our DBA team know every intricate piece of the software end. All the pieces from our standpoint were working fine during testing and the people who were a part of the test environment ensured us that everything looked fine, until we went live. We are not proficient with oracle either since we are mostly a SQL house, so we just want to make sure we get it right before proceeding. We did attempt to install the client a few days ago and after the install it wiped our original oracle home even though we allocated a different path for the client? We could still connect to the database from other client PCs so it didn't hurt anything but we uninstalled until we had further clarification.
