My PC is on a large network and when I run ODBC (odbcad32.exe)
it uses a network tnsnames.ora.

I want ODBC to read the local tnsnames so I set up a TNS_ADMIN
variable pointing to my %ORACLE_HOME%\NETWORK\ADMIN directory.

I put the value for TNS_ADMIN in the Environment and in the registry.
All to no avail - ODBC still reads the network tnsnames.

How can I get it to read the local one?

Thanks,

SPJohnm

Does your environment variables include %ORACLE_HOME% ? If not, did you try to include the full path to the tnsnames.ora ?

Hi,

Yes, ORACLE_HOME is set (C:\Ora10g)
and TNS_ADMIN = C:\Ora10g\NETWORK\ADMIN

I was wondering - I am not the Administrator on my machine
but I have full administrator rights.

Regardless of this, would ODBC be using the Administrator
login which won't have the TNS_ADMIN variable set?

Thanks,

John

You should be able to set TNS_ADMIN as a user environment variable using the account that has full administrator account. Specifying the TNS_ADMIN user environment variable as C:\ora10g\network\admin "should" work for you. This account does have read access to the directory, right?

I can read the Administrators Documents and Settings but I
cannot log on as Administrator. I have "Administrator" rights
in that I can access most things an administrator can - except
the Admin login.

I don't have any trouble setting the TNS_ADMIN variable. I just
cannot get ODBC to use it when it reads the tnsnames.ora file.
