My application server has become very slow (OS WINDOWS 2000). I scaned and found that there was no virus infection and so I was advised to reinstall the OS. My question is when I reinstall windows 2000 and give it back the same network configuration IP, address and so on will the previous mapping on the client hold good or should I remap for each client/machine. Windows 2000 is installed on the C drive where as the application programs are on the D drive. I will only format the C drive and reinstall windows.

Secondly if I do the same to the database server ie reinstall windows and oracle can I straight away carry on working with oracle. Windows is on C, Oracle is on D and the database files are on E and F. So only C will be formated and windows installed, then oracle will the reinstalled on D giving the same database name and sid.

Please tell me if doing things this way is alright.

Thank you

Alister.

It sounds like standard operating procedures on Windoze.

I really dont know. I just want some suggestions please because starting and shutting down windows takes time, so I thought may be windows is slowing things down.

Ready, Fire, Aim. I hope you enjoy your guessing game.

Without verifiable metrics you are simply shooting in the dark hoping to get lucky.

hi,
I guess this is a 32bit windows and 32 bit oracle database. How much memory do you have in the server?

There is a physical limit to the SGA size in a 32bit system.
Do you have the parameters /3GB, /PAE included in your windows start script?

regards

Alan

Are you ever going to tell us what version of Oracle you are running (to 4 decimal places)?

>2 – 256MB DDR Registered PC2100 W/ECC
Are you really expecting Oracle to perform well on 512MB RAM?

Hi

I am using Oracle 8.1.7. Since it was a small database 512 Mb did not give us any problems. Even now the fetching of queries etc are quiet fast. The main problem I encountered is when a form is being executed. It takes time for the main page to be displayed, after that things are normal.
